The Small Reactor is a 3x2 Reactor automatically built and unlocked at level one. The Small Reactor is the largest, earliest, and cheapest way of generating power for the player's ship. Due to the importance of power, many players will tend to target the Small Reactor, especially in the early game.
The Small Reactor will continue to provide power to the player's ship even when it's upgrading, EMP'd, or System Hacked. The amount of power the Small Reactor generates can also vary if it's damaged. Put simply, the power bars are treated as health bars, with one health bar representing one power.
Reactors in general also have some hidden mechanics. For example, the game forces the player to have one Reactor on their ship at all times. Along with this, if no reactor has full power, the game will give the player a 0% Escape Rate, even if the player has a Bridge.
Small Reactors can be a massive target for enemy boarders. Instead of wasting Crew potential by placing them in the Small Reactor, many players recommend placing Landmines in the Small Reactor. Separating them with Security Gates will also work. In general, Small reactors should be accessible by Crew and should have at least 2 blocks of Armor around them.
When To Use
The Small Reactor should be used whenever it can. It's cheap, it provides a lot of power, and power is incredibly important. There really is no reason not to use the Small Reactor.
The Small Reactor cannot be programmed with AI. The Small Reactor is categorized as a "Reactor" in AI coding.
The Small Reactor cannot be buffed by Crew.
